"off on the wrong foot"
To get off to a bad start is to get "off on the wrong foot." Example: "Tomorrow is our first meeting with this client so let's not get off on the wrong foot." To start off on a journey we must first get "off on" one foot and it is important to get off on the "right foot", not the "wrong foot." Example: "Let's try to start on time tomorrow and get off on the right foot." A relationship which has begun badly is "off on the wrong foot." Example: "We didn't have a good day filming today; we got off on the wrong foot." Example: "Sometimes it's hard to fix things when you get off on the wrong foot."
