"back down from someone or something"



To back down is to quit one's plans to fight. Example: "If I were you, I would back down. It is not worth fighting about."

If you were planning to compete, but now you have decided not to, you backed down. Example: "Maybe you don't know me, but I would never back down from a challenge."
