"Can't Hold A Candle To Someone"



You "can't hold a candle to" someone when that person is much better than you.

Example: "You are a good tennis player. But you can't hold a candle to my sister."



When the other person (or thing) is much better, the one "can't hold a candle to" the other.

Example: "She's a good cook. But she can't hold a candle to my mother."
