Explain Something Away ( ... )
"explained it away"



To explain it away is to find different excuses for why it happened. Example: "People must have been curious when they found out." Reply: "No, they just explained it away."

To explain something away is to find reasons which are not the most important reasons for why something happened. Example: "Noone will remember. They will either forget, or they will explain it away." Another example: "I want to know the real reason it happened. Don't just explain it away."
