To talk about the thing that is most important is to get at the heart of the matter. Example: "I asked him to stop wasting time and get at the heart of the matter."

The heart of the matter is the most important thing; to get at the heart of the matter is to talk about or face the most important part. Example: "I love that professor. He always gets at the heart of the matter." Another example: "Let's get at the heart of the matter."
