Up Against ( competing with ... )
"up against"



The thing that you are competing with is what you are up against. Example: "You are up against a tough team. How do you feel about that?" Another example: "There is a tumor in the chest. That is what we are up against."

You have to stand up, face, and fight against the thing that you are up against. Example: "I hope you know what you are up against." Another example: "We have been up against stronger opponents."
